Many see it in their everyday lives, many just have to pick up the newspaper or sign on the internet to see it. You can come home and turn on the T.V. and see it everywhere. It runs and ruins what should and ought to be right with the American political system. What is this corrupt and destructive thing that runs amok in our everyday lives? It is simply the big corporate lobbying system that proceeds to determine the future of every American of our country. It serves as a stepping stone for most who aspire to be politicians or get appointed to high government positions.
It can be strongly argued for that big insurance and pharmaceuticals helped sway congress away from the possibility of a public option. It is evident in that its lobby is so big that it even scares politicians from even mentioning Single-payer health care. Obama and the White House have even mentioned it would be political suicide to go for Single-Payer. Now regardless of anyone’s stance on the subject of Health Care this is the most recent evidence of how big corporations can lobby successfully for the interest of their own profits.
Now does anyone remember Obama saying he would “limit” the number of lobbyists in his administration. Well that surely can be seen as false. Here’s and excerpt from the New York Times :
In what ethics-in-government advocates described as a particularly far-reaching move, Mr. Obama barred officials of his administration from lobbying their former colleagues “for as long as I am president.” He barred former lobbyists from working for agencies they had lobbied within the past two years and required them to recuse themselves from issues they had handled during that time. -NYT
In November 2007, Obama boasted at a campaign event that lobbyists “won’t find a job in my White House.” So far according to The National Journal- there have been 12 appointed lobbyists to the Obama administration. Many of them representing key areas of needed reform.
Mark Patterson notably for the Chief of Staff to Tim Geithner (Secretary of the treasury). Patterson a former lobbyist to the behemoth Goldman Sachs. If you don’t remember Goldman Sachs is one of the few bailed out massive banks on Wall St. that has had its hand in corrupt dealings and abusive tactics. Now what kind of regulation can one expect of Wall st. giants like Goldman, J.P. Morgan Chase, ect. who will do anything to try and keep the status quo of unregulated activities (abusive short selling and market manipulation) when Obama’s economic ear is one that has been working for the industry for years. Including Geithner (served as President of New York Federal Reserve) whos ties to these banks goes without question. I can also go into Max Baucus’ dealings with Insurance companies in the past but there is also much more of this going around.
Although one can point out that lobbying is also for good interest such as promoting Green Jobs, Agricultural protection and so on and so forth. These small and meager lobby’s do have good interests and ideas though it is evident in these times that money has paved the way towards policy making in Washington. Many like myself wonder where has the peoples voice gone. An overwhelming majority of citizens polled that they did not want the financial bailouts of big Wall st. banks. Still those results were ignored along with many others. It has come to the point where America has been taken over by the special interest groups who do nothing but preserve there own future. I know many have said this before and it feels like im preaching to the choir but it is time to do something about it. Stop voting for the career politicians and help get people informed of the shady backgrounds of candidates.
